UPM Acoustics Master’s students visit SARTI–MAR OBSEA to learn about acoustic applications in the marine environment

2026-01-22

A group of students from the Master’s Degree in Acoustics at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) took part in a training visit to the SARTI–MAR OBSEA underwater observatory, located in Vilanova i la Geltrú and operated by the SARTI research group of the UPC.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn in detail about the scientific infrastructures that enable real-time monitoring of the marine environment, as well as the integration of sensors, communication systems and instrumental platforms that form part of the OBSEA observatory.

The visit included several specialised modules focused on the applications of acoustics in oceanography:

  • underwater noise monitoring,
  • use of hydrophones for ecosystem studies,
  • passive acoustic techniques,
  • technological challenges of continuous ocean observation.

This activity enabled a direct exchange of knowledge between the students and the technical and scientific team at SARTI, strengthening collaboration between institutions and contributing to the training of specialists in marine technologies. The session also highlighted the role of OBSEA as a key infrastructure within the EMSO ERIC network.
