Matias Carandell Widmer, researcher at the Department of Electronic Engineering and the SARTI research group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has received a Leonardo grant from the BBVA Foundation to develop new solutions in marine monitoring. The project, focused on the development of autonomous emerging buoys, seeks to optimize the capture and transmission of real-time data on marine ecosystems, contributing to a more efficient understanding and protection of the oceans.

Carandell's innovation will enable immediate transmission of data collected by underwater platforms through a network of nanosatellites, making data accessible without the need to retrieve monitoring stations. This technology will be implemented in three phases: design and manufacture of the system, tests at sea in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and validation in real conditions. In addition to advancing environmental research, the system can be applied to the management of fishery resources and the protection of vulnerable marine areas.
